Volunteer with us

Thank you for expressing an interest in volunteering with us. Some information here and on the following page will tell you a bit more about how we work and help you decide whether or not a neutering trip is for you.

First of all we have to apologise for the limited number of placements we have available. It's not that we are not doing very much, but simply that most of our volunteers enjoy their visit that much that they come back again. As a result, around 70% of those working with us are returning and placements for new recruits are quite rare. We take that as a compliment and a reflection on the calibre of the people we have had working with us. The type of person we are looking for are those who are more interested in a well equipped, legal, and long term sustainable project than those who are only concerned about having their aifare paid for, going somewhere hot, or partying. Many of our team members prefer to return to the same location each time rather than flit around because they enjoy the satisfaction of watching projects grow and developing working relationships with local volunteers and authorities, They epitomise the spirit of what we are looking for and also our group, we try to make a real difference in a few not particularly glamorous locations rather than globetrot .

The other reason we have limited opportunities is because we run inclusive, locally led projects aimed at inspiring ongoing local work. This means that more often than not, a lot of work is done or supplemented by locals and that we are principally looking for vets, nurses and trappers who are able to act as mentors, instructors, and trainers.

We work principally within local communities in areas where Brits don't go on holiday. That means that if you like to only eat British food when you go on holiday, or don't want to learn or speak any foreign language or interact with locals, a trip with us is not for you but there are other charities working in holiday resorts who would be able to find you a placement.

Basically we need:

Vets who are registered in the UK as an MRCVS, or registered in the country we are working in. You should be able to spay a cat in 30 minutes and a bitch within about 50 minutes. We look for a minimum of 18 months to 2 years experience in practice. We do not offer placements to new graduates or students. More about this here:

Nurses who are VNs or who have substantial in-practice experience as a working vet nurse. At the least, you should be able to calculate doses, put in cannulas, do an IV injection of a small volume into a small vein, and be well organised.

Trappers who are experienced working in animal welfare and dealing with difficult situations and people. If you volunteer as a trapper you will be required to follow our trapping methods and practices. We do not recruit well-meaning but inexperienced members of the public as trappers, as we are aiming to ensure high completion rates of cat colonies and that only good methods get passed on. More about trapping here:

What you'll need to do

If you volunteer with us we will provide accommodation, equipment, instruments, materials, and transport locally. We don't provide, arrange, or cover the cost of airfares or other travel. We do ask you to arrive and leave at specific times to be met for lifts. We also don't cover the cost of food. Sometimes, meals and lunch are provided locally but this should be assumed to be a bonus rather than something expected as we are often working with locals whose time and funds are stretched. We also do not include sightseeing days within the trip - our days are straight neutering days with shoulder travel/setup days at each end. However in most locations we can provide extra accomodation at either end for a day or two if you want to sightsee but this will mean that you will need to get yourself to and from airports on those days.

So after reading this, if you are still interested and we haven't put you off (that wasn't the aim, but we enjoy a high standard of volunteer and we want to maintain that!) then please click the button to find out more about the practicalities.
